Our Work

Science and Veterans

Hundreds of thousands of veterans live with the lasting effects of trauma — including PTSD, disrupted sleep, and chronic stress. These challenges are complex, widespread, and often invisible, demanding a public health response rooted in evidence and compassion.

Our work is focused on closing the gap between what science knows and what care delivers. We fund and support cutting-edge research, advocate for evidence-based treatment, and build programs that bring real solutions to veterans, their families, and the communities around them.

By mapping the biology of trauma, driving innovation in care, and building bridges between research and recovery, we’re working to deliver the right help, to the right veterans, at the right time — and to shape a healthier future for generations of veterans to come.

Trauma-related mental health problems for warfighters are complicated, widespread, and often untreated. Hundreds of thousands of veterans struggle with PTSD, sleep disruption, and long-term stress related to military service. This is not a small issue — it’s a large-scale public health concern that affects veterans, their families, and entire communities.

Science provides the tools and evidence to uncover what actually helps. From mapping the scope of veteran health challenges to testing effective interventions, scientific research allows us to support not just one veteran, but entire generations. It’s the key to delivering care that’s timely, targeted, and lasting.

Nearly 700,000 of the 3.5 million post-9/11 veterans are projected to experience PTSD. Yet over 90% of veterans with PTSD are not receiving evidence-based treatment. This care gap has serious consequences, leaving far too many without the support they need to heal.

Scientific discovery makes it possible to provide care that is not just reactive, but precise. The goal is simple: deliver the right help, to the right veterans, at the right time. This means expanding access, tailoring treatment, and ensuring that every veteran has the opportunity to recover and thrive.
